Description:

Painted Tyrolean wardrobe dated 1810, representative of early 19th-century Alpine furniture production from the Austro-Tyrolean area. Conceived as a functional domestic storage piece, it also displays a strong decorative character.

From a construction standpoint, the wardrobe is entirely made of solid softwood (spruce), a timber widely used in Tyrolean tradition for its availability and structural stability. The structure is solid and compact, with a rectangular case, solid sides, and a slightly projecting molded base that provides both stability and vertical emphasis. The upper cornice is shaped and articulated in multiple stepped moldings, a typical feature of Alpine cabinetry of this period.

The front is composed of a single full-height door, side-hung with original wrought-iron hardware, complete with its original lock, key, and shaped escutcheon. The door is enriched with two framed octagonal panels, hand-decorated with stylized floral motifs: polychrome flower bouquets rendered in a warm palette of ochre, orange, red, and brown on a light ground. The painted decoration is executed in tempera with a casein base and outlined by fine colored borders that emphasize the geometric layout.

The chamfered edges also feature vertically painted reserves with similar floral motifs, while a continuous decorative band runs beneath the upper cornice, embellished with repeated floral and phytomorphic elements, reinforcing the visual unity of the piece. The dominant petrol-green (blue-green) background color is characteristic of Tyrolean furniture of the period and serves as an ideal backdrop for the livelier painted decoration.

Inside, the wardrobe reflects a simple and functional approach: the interior is unpainted, with a fixed lower shelf and a pull-out drawer at the base.

Of particular note is the original lock with its matching key, both preserved and fully functional.

Restoration Information:

The photographs show the piece in unrestored or partially restored condition.
At the time of sale, restoration will be completed according to the client’s preferences. The exterior will be wax-finished, with the removal of superficial scratches and abrasions, while the interior will be cleaned and finished with shellac.

Our workshop guarantees a conservative restoration approach, fully respecting the integrity and authenticity of each piece. All items are treated to ensure structural stability, durability, and hygiene.

Once restoration is complete, the wardrobe will be ready for use and suitable for storing clothing, tableware, or foodstuffs.

Planned Interventions:

• Structural restoration: replacement of small missing parts, closure of any gaps in the back panels, consolidation of weakened areas, inspection and repair of hardware.

• Careful anti-woodworm treatment.

• Cleaning and sanitization of the interior.

• Exterior finish with natural beeswax.

• Interior finish with shellac, a natural alcohol-based varnish.
