Oval Extendable Walnut Dining Table, 19th Century

An elegant oval extendable dining table, a refined Emilian (Italy) piece from the early 19th century, crafted in walnut with beech legs. In the Italian antiques tradition this form is often sought as a “tavolo antico allungabile ovale”.

Code: T102
Period: Early 19th Century
Origin: Emilia
Materials: Walnut and Beech
Height: 79 cm
Width: 120 cm
Length when closed: 165 cm
Length when extended with leaves: 246 cm

Uniting poise and practicality, this table is ideal for interiors that call for a distinguished centerpiece with generous seating capacity.

Description:

The top is veneered in four sections of flamed walnut, arranged to form a refined four‑part herringbone motif at the center. The veneers are symmetrically matched, creating a balanced composition that celebrates the wood’s natural figure. The opening is central: the two halves slide on wooden runners to accommodate two solid‑wood extension leaves, enlarging the surface while preserving the graceful oval profile.

The perimeter apron is finished in end‑grain walnut, a choice that emphasizes the vertical texture of the wood and sets a subtle contrast with the top. Along the lower edge runs a continuous moulding with light carved detail. The legs—solid beech—display the characteristic faceted workmanship of 19th‑century Emilian tables: a truncated‑conical section with joined flat faces, crowned at the top by an elegant carved rhomboid motif.

From a functional standpoint, the proportions are generous and well‑balanced. Closed (165 × 120 cm), the table seats six comfortably, up to eight in a closer arrangement. Fully extended (246 × 120 cm), it accommodates ten diners with ease, up to twelve when required.
